You’ve got 4 limbs – two arms and two legs. That’s all you need for some everyday brain fitness.
Recently with a video brain fitness coaching client, I had him lift an arm or leg while in a standing position.
I had assigned numbers 1-4 to each of his limbs over several previous sessions. On this day, we progressed to letters A-D. After using that in the warm-up, I had him choose words starting with each of the letters. Here’s what he came up with:
LEFT Arm = A = Apple
RIGHT Arm = B = Ball
LEFT Leg = C = Cat
RIGHT Leg = D = Dog
We did one set with a body weight squat where I said the word and as he stood up he would raise the corresponding leg or arm out to the side.
Then we added dumbbells to the exercise and he would squat with the dumbbells and then lift the corresponding leg or arm out to the side.
Then the fun really began.
I encouraged him to make what we did a game with his wife. Anytime during the day while in the house, either one of them could say the word and the other person would have to lift the corresponding limb.
A fusion of fun, movement, and memory.
This session happened prior to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday in the US. He and his wife enjoyed the game so much they shared with their grandchildren when they arrived to visit for the holiday. And the kids took to this like a fish to water.
Fitness and fun are easily available to you every hour of the day. You don’t need specialized gadgets, gear, or programs. Give this a try and run with it. Every couple of days, select new words for A-D. And use other letters like E-F-G-H, and so on. By the end of the year, you can potentially have worked your way through the entire alphabet in groups of 4 letters at a time.
