How I Spent My Summer Non-Vacation…

You know what it’s like.

Life hands you 8 number 1 priorities all at the same time.

When that happens, listen to what your body tells you it needs.

This summer didn’t really feature much vacation.  Had lots of professional opportunities that made sense to take advantage of – new clients and new consulting.  All good.  But also, you can’t work all the time.  And a lot of it kept me indoors getting more screen time than I usually get.

So, what do you do for some downtime and mental break when you can’t really fit in a getaway?

Interestingly, there was a faint whisper of an inkling of a desire that began building.

It was to get outside and play.

I made a commitment to get outside and be active.  I still worked out this summer, but I likely had less formal workouts than I have ever had in summer.

Instead, I listened to the inner voice that kept saying “get outside and play.”

I made it a commitment to go boardin’, ballin’, or biking once a week each.  That’s SUP, beach volleyball, and biking.  I mostly succeeded.

It’s what my spirit needed.

As I reflected on this summer to write this, I was searching for what’s the valuable message for you.  It’s to listen to what your body tells you it wants and needs in terms of the format of physical activity to pursue.

Sometimes, the best workout is the one your body wants to do, in the place it wants to do it, with the people it wants to do it with.  It’s not what you “should” do that day.

This kind of harmony is rare in a world where we constantly Must. Be. Doing. Something.  Some of those things are genuine requirements while others are self-induced “needs” from letting too many other external voices dictate our actions.  Trust your inner voice sometimes.  It’s on your side.
